Where the glucose evidence actually sits
Chromium Picolinate is the most researched entry on this label. It is an essential trace mineral involved in insulin signalling, and meta-analyses of supplementation in type 2 diabetes report small reductions in fasting glucose and HbA1c. The picolinate form is used because it absorbs better than chromium chloride. Researched doses run roughly 200 to 1,000 micrograms daily. Two caveats the marketing omits: the benefit concentrates in people who were deficient or poorly controlled to begin with, and chromium interferes with levothyroxine absorption when taken close together.
Gymnema Leaf Extract has been used in Ayurvedic practice for centuries under a name meaning “sugar destroyer,” and it has the most direct mechanism here. Gymnemic acids appear to reduce intestinal sugar absorption, and on contact with the tongue they temporarily blunt sweet taste. Human trials have reported reductions in fasting glucose and HbA1c, though many are small, older, and conducted alongside conventional treatment rather than as standalone therapy. Standardisation is usually expressed as a gymnemic acid percentage — which this label does not state.
The one with a safety signal
Green Tea Leaf Extract supplies catechins, principally EGCG, studied for insulin sensitivity and carbohydrate absorption with modest and inconsistent human results. What deserves more attention is the liver. Concentrated green tea extract has been associated with rare but serious hepatotoxicity, and several regulatory bodies have issued warnings or required cautionary labelling. The risk appears greater at high doses and on an empty stomach. The three we would question
Panax Ginseng Aerial Extract. Read the name carefully: aerial parts are the leaves and stems, not the root. Essentially all the ginseng research relating to glucose used the root, which has a different ginsenoside profile. Aerial parts are also considerably cheaper. The official page names it as an aerial extract and then describes it as “an ancient root,” which cannot both be correct. Ginseng also interacts with warfarin and can cause insomnia.
African Mango Seed Extract (Irvingia gabonensis) had a marketing surge as a weight-loss ingredient on the back of a small number of trials, several of which drew methodological criticism. Independent reviews have described the evidence as weak and insufficient. Direct human evidence for blood glucose control specifically is thin.
Maca Root Extract is studied mainly for energy, mood and sexual function. Its research base for blood glucose is close to non-existent. The stress-and-cortisol justification is real physiology but a long way from demonstrated glycaemic benefit. In a six-slot blood sugar formula, giving one to maca means not giving it to berberine, alpha-lipoic acid, cinnamon or magnesium — all of which have more on-topic data.
What is missing is as informative as what is present. The ingredients with the strongest human evidence for glucose control are not on this label. Berberine has repeatedly been compared favourably against metformin in trials, though it carries its own significant drug interactions.
